Allama Iqbal
علامہ اقبال
"The Poet of the East."
Life & Literary Heritage
Dr. Sir Allama Mohammad Iqbal is the national poet of Pakistan, the 'Poet of the East' (Shair-e-Mashriq), a legendary philosopher, lawyer, politician, and spiritual revivalist. Writing in both Urdu and Persian, Iqbal’s magnificent, revolutionary poetry and modern philosophical lectures resurrected the self-respect of colonized Muslims of South Asia, presenting the powerful modern concept of 'Khudi' (Selfhood) and providing the political framework that led to the birth of Pakistan.
The Prodigy of Sialkot and Early Western Journeys
Born in Sialkot, Iqbal completed his early education under the tutelage of Sayyid Mir Hasan. He graduated from Government College, Lahore, before traveling to Europe for higher studies.
In the West, Iqbal achieved a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College, Cambridge, was admitted to the Bar at Lincoln’s Inn, and earned a Doctorate in Philosophy from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, Germany. His doctoral thesis, 'The Development of Metaphysics in Persia', remains a masterpiece of comparative philosophy.
The Philosophy of 'Khudi' (Self-Actualization)
Unlike standard mystic poets who advocated for self-abnegation and escaping the painful material world, Iqbal formulated an active, positive philosophy of action. He called for the strengthening of 'Khudi' (the unique individual self).
In works like 'Asrar-e-Khudi' (Secrets of the Self) and 'Bal-e-Jibreel' (Gabriel's Wing), he argued that humans are the co-creators of the universe with God, declaring: 'Strengthen your Self (Khudi) to such heights that before writing your destiny, God asks you: Tell Me, what is your desire?'
Timeless Masterpieces and the Reconstruction of Thought
His Urdu poetry collections—'Bang-e-Dara' (The Call of the Marching Bell), 'Bal-e-Jibreel', and 'Zarb-e-Kaleem' (The Blow of Moses)—combine breathtaking poetic craftsmanship with profound philosophical inquiry.
In prose, his English-language lectures—'The Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam'—stands as one of the most brilliant modern attempts to reconcile classical Islamic philosophy with cutting-edge German, French, and English sciences.
Iqbal's tomb located at the gates of the historic Badshahi Mosque in Lahore remains a high-venerated site of pilgrimage for state leaders, scholars, and millions of readers around the globe.
